Anhui is one of the most important agricultural provinces in China. The major staple crops are rice, wheat, beans, maize, sorghum and sweet potatoes. Cash crops include cotton, tobacco, peanuts, sesame, rapeseed, tea, hemp, silk, fruits, tung oil, and raw lacquer.
Anhui's primary industry accounts for 15% of GDP, 50% higher than the national average of 10%, with major crops including rice, wheat and sweet potato. Anhui has a variety of natural resources including large iron deposits in Maanshan, coal from Huainan, and copper mines in Tongling.
Compared to neighbouring provinces on China's east coast Anhui has not experienced the same rapid economic growth, as a result Anhui's GDP per capita is around one-third of its neighbours Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Hefei, Wuhu, and Maanshan have benefited from there close location to Yangtze river and as results are significantly wealthier than the rest of the province due to their industrial and manufacturing industries.
According to preliminary accounting,the GDP of Anhui province in 2007 was 734.57 billion Yuan (RMB), up 13.9% over the previous year. The added value of primary industry was 121.47 billion Yuan, up 4.1% since last year; that of secondary industry, 328.26 billion Yuan, up 19.3%; and that of tertiary industry, 284.84 billion Yuan, up by 12.3% since 2007.
The ratio of the three industries was 16.5∶44.7∶38.8. Calculated in the resident population, GDP per capita amounted to 12,015 Yuan (1,580 $US), an increase of 1,960 Yuan over the previous year. The social productivity was 19,436 Yuan per capita, an increase of 2,842 Yuan over the previous year.
In the year 2007, Paid-in foreign direct investment reached an increase of 62.2%. All the rises are the biggest of the past three years respectively. Investment in fixed assets grew by 62.8%, the total volume of social consumer goods increased by 17.2%, and local fiscal revenue, with an increase of 34.5%, the highest in the past four years. The top counties like Ningguo, Fanchang, Fengtai, Feixi, Dangtu, Wuhu, Feidong, Wuwei, Tianchang and Guangde play a key role in leading Anhui in terms of the county-level economic development.
